Curating a Fresh Start: My Intentional Home Reset Routine
There is a specific kind of energy that comes with the end of the year. While the instinct is often to rush immediately into resolutions and high-energy goals, I’ve found that true progress starts with the environment we live in.
This week, I’m not focusing on “slowing down”—I’m focusing on getting intentional.
I want my home to feel like a canvas that is ready for the year ahead, not a storage unit for the year behind. If you are feeling the urge to clear the noise and set a purposeful tone for January, here is the exact intentional reset routine I’m using today.
1. Clearing the Visual Noise
I recently wrote about Designing for Stillness in our bathroom renovation, and that project taught me a huge lesson: visual clutter creates mental clutter.
For this reset, I’m not just “cleaning up.” I am auditing the visual noise in my main living spaces.
The Method:
- The Surface Sweep: I clear off every flat surface—kitchen island, coffee table, nightstands—completely.
- The “One Item” Rule: Before putting anything back, I ask: Does this serve a purpose for my routine right now?
- Restoring Neutrality: I love color, but for a reset, I try to bring the room back to a neutral baseline. This gives my eyes (and brain) a place to rest.
2. The Digital Edit
We often curate our homes but neglect our digital environments. An intentional life means being mindful of what we consume.
I spent 20 minutes this morning doing a “digital detox” of my feeds.
- Unsubscribe: If an email hits my inbox and creates stress or unnecessary urge to buy things I don’t need, I unsubscribe.
- Unfollow: I curated my social media feed to ensure I’m seeing content that inspires my fitness and design goals (like training for my next run!) rather than content that makes me feel behind.
3. Curating the Atmosphere
Once the clutter is gone, the fun part is adding warmth back in intentionally. This isn’t about buying new decor; it’s about shifting the energy of the home.
- Lighting: I’m swapping overhead lights for lamp light in the evenings to signal to my body that the day is done.
- Scent: I’m switching to cleaner, fresher scents (think eucalyptus, linen, or cedar) to match the crisp feeling of a new season.
The Takeaway
An intentional reset isn’t about perfection. It is about function and peace. It’s about setting up your space so that when you wake up on January 1st, nothing is standing in your way.
